In announcing the award, the AAPOR cited the breadth and global impact of Professor Shapiro's scholarship illustrating the ties between public opinion and public policy, politicians, and the media; his advocacy and service to the institutions that support and improve public opinion and survey research; and his generous mentorship to generations of students, particularly those from underrepresented groups.
