Ian Magowan

Research Interest

Ian Magowan is an M.A. candidate in political science, specializing in comparative politics and political theory. His research interests center on state-society relations, power asymmetries in political systems, and the role of liberal institutions in shaping governance and sovereignty within global frameworks. In his work, Mr. Magowan applies a multi-method research strategy, integrating qualitative historical analysis, archival analysis, and quantitative methodologies, including experimental survey techniques. He also incorporates a phenomenological approach to explore how individuals and groups experience political processes, adding depth to his understanding of lived experiences within political systems.

Mr. Magowan received his B.A. in political science from Amherst College. Prior to enrolling at Columbia, he worked at a human rights foundation, where he focused on policy research and advocacy related to global humanitarian issues.
