Ivan “Vanya” Barrer is currently an M.A candidate in the department of political science, with specializations in international relations and data science. Mr. Barrer’s specific research interests include political epidemiology, U.S foreign policy, and international security. Before his matriculation at Columbia University, Mr. Barrer received his A.B in politics with a minor in chemistry from Oberlin College.
Throughout his tenure at Oberlin, Mr. Barrer was also employed as an aviation systems engineering intern part-time for the MITRE Corporation, working in their Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) for multiple government sponsor agencies. His most recent project in this capacity involved developing a 3D shapefile dataset of NYC in 2050 to predict the effect of advancing urbanization on intra-city weather events through the application of the Joint Outdoor Indoor Large Eddy Simulation (JOULES) model while simultaneously varying climate conditions through 128 model runs.
