Graduate Program Advising

The department assigns a faculty adviser to each entering student in both the M.A. program and the Ph.D. program prior to the first semester of enrollment. These adviser assignments are preliminary and are based on affinities between faculty expertise and research interests that students express during the admission process.

Students may change advisers at any time by completing the adviser change form and submitting it to the Graduate Program Coordinator, who will update the department record.

The department encourages students to seek mentoring from a variety of faculty members.

While adviser-advisee relationships vary, all faculty members and students are expected to observe effective practices and expectations for faculty members and student advisees described on the GSAS website

Please see the M.A. requirements page for further information on M.A. advising.
