Biography

Alex Mathieu is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. Her research interests include nationalism, citizenship, ethnic identity, as well as the role of status and soft power in international relations. She also has a regional interest in East Asia, with a focus on Japan and Japanese politics.

Ms. Mathieu received her B.A. in Government & Legal Studies and Asian Studies from Bowdoin College, where her undergraduate thesis, which focused on the relationship between the Japanese lay judge system and deliberative democracy, was rewarded with "High Honors" in the Department of Asian Studies. She worked as an analyst at Locus Analytics in Manhattan before joining the department.
