Hanzhang Liu is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. Her research interests include authoritarian institutions, Chinese political economy, and bureaucratic politics. In her dissertation, she studies the impact of upward mobility generated by elite recruitment on authoritarian regime survival, focusing on the civil service examination in contemporary China as a case in point.
Before coming to Columbia, Hanzhang received her B.A. magna cum laude in Government and Economics from Smith College.
