Tom Leavitt is a third year Ph.D. student in political science at Columbia University, specializing in comparative politics, methodology, and the philosophy of social science. His current research focuses on the politics of colonial state formation in sub-Saharan Africa.
Tom is also a long-serving teaching assistant for the Causal Inference course taught by professors Ben Hansen and Jake Bowers at the ICPSR summer program. Before coming to Columbia, Tom received a master’s degree (with honors) from the University of Chicago and lived for two years in Uganda, where he served as a research assistant at Makerere University.
Tom's research has been funded by the Center for Study of Development Strategies (CSDS), the Center for Development Economics and Policy (CDEP) and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL).
