Professor Roger Hilsman, Jr., died on February 23, 2014. Professor Hilsman combined a distinguished career in public service with an estimable academic career. Before coming to Columbia in 1964, he served as Assistant Secretory of State in the Kennedy administration. Professor Hilsman taught some of the most popular courses at Columbia College. His "Politics of Policymaking" course routinely enrolled more than 250 students. He was the author of many books and articles on intelligence, bureaucratic politics, and defense issues, as well as a widely used text on the American political system.
